Night Time Tour of Johannesburg

Sleeping Jo'Burg

Last night Doris and I went to Patrick's son Redwon (spelled phonetically) school for a dinner where Redwon was cooking the main course. Redwon is studying hotel and restaurant management and this dinner was part of his final exam. Unfortunatly the main course was never served due to a blackout in the schools neighborhood. Doris and I met some local people around our age and made some friends in addition to eating a delicious soup, appetizer, and dessert.

After dinner Patrick took us on a drive around the city to see what it was like at night. His son and Daughter, Nadia, came along. They asked us questions about states many of their questions were about the status of racism in our country. We had an interesting discussion as we traveled into downtown Jo'Burg.

Everyone you talk to warns of walking on the streets at night but it really didn't seem all that bad. In fact, aside from a few maintenance people and security guards, the city was almost completely empty. I guess everyone is taking their own advice to heart. The one place where there was activity was in Newtown. This district was renovated from an industrial center for the mining industry into a business and cultural center by "Blue IQ." Blue IQ is a South African investment company working with the government. Here we saw people outside of bars having a good time. Patrick loves show us around the city. By the time we got home his kids were fast asleep in the back seat. We said good bye quietly.
