SA Wild Life: Weaver Bird

A Weaver Birds Nest

I realize that I have been writing a lot about racism and xenophobia. These are the things that are prevalent to me as a new comer and I am compelled to write and make sense of them for myself. That being said, there is more to South Africa than Apartheid and Xenophobia. For instance: outside of BTMs conference room window, no more than 6 feet away from the sill a Weaver Bird Decided to building his nest. And I caught him on the day he decided to build it. I've seen these birds on Discovery Channel Documentaries but I've never seen one out in the wild (obviously, I'd never been to South Africa).

Here he's tucking a palm leaf into his little basket

I spotted him building his nest out of the corner of my eye and ran to get my camera. I don't know why I ran, it was obvious this bird was planning to stick around for a while. When I got back he was gone, but it wasn't long before he returned with a piece of palm and began stuffing it into the structure he had been building. I was really excited by this. I told Doris, she'd been teasing about my interest in the local birds, I keep trying get pictures of them and as soon as my camera's ready the bird flies away. Doris was mildly interested by the nest building and let me take a few pictures with her camera, she has a better zoom than I do. Most of the pics were blurry but I got a few good ones. This little birds nest might attracted a little lady bird and then he'll be able to start a little family. Unfortunately I'll be gone before the eggs hatch... If his nest is good enough and he is lucky. Nothing is sure thing in Johannesburg.
