We are surrounded by nothing but labels, race, color, and the stains left by Apartheid. Joe and I are nearly sick of talking about it but racism is like the air. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there. The above quote on my monitor was taken from a BBC documentary aired in Johannesburg earlier this week about Barack Obama, said by a political psychologist who claims race is the unconscious factor that influences how you interact with someone. Again, there is not a day that goes by where we don't talk about Apartheid and racism.
My dear friend Salma who works in the offices below ours says: "America has the same problems as us. You guys just have the money to masquerade it better."
Some days become depressing in light of these conversations. However, Salma gave Joe and I a book that I have been reading at nights called Apartheid: The Lighter Side. It's a compilation of newspaper headlines that when read in volume makes you want to laugh about the corrupt system. Yes, actually laughing at Apartheid's face. Can you believe it?
